Adventures With Spell Check
I
was running Spell Check on my latest novel, and everything was going
swell. Then it ground to a stop at selfie.
This brilliant software -- confident in its ability to identify all of
the letters in a word as complex as onomatopoeia
-- found one of the most commonplace words of the early 21st century
discombobulating.
Spell
Check’s alternatives included elfie
and Sheltie.
Elfie? I ran a Google search. Urban Dictionary calls it a selfie of an
elf. Elfie can also refer to an elephant
taking its own photo -- which proves that animals can be just as silly as
humans.
Sheltie. An amazingly smart breed. Can a Sheltie take a selfie? Would she use her nose or her paws to push
the button on a cell phone?
I
worry about accidentally clicking on Change instead of Ignore and turning my
stories into gibberish:
“Look
at this guy’s elfie. He never
smiles. He looks like Buster
Keaton.”
“She’s
so vain. Every time she goes to the
salon, she posts a Sheltie on Instagram.”
